Epic Fail: My rendezvous with Marley

Best Blogger Tips
I went ballistic when Ate Fred told me about a Bob Marley photo exhibit that kicked off about a week ago here in Dubai.  Gulf photo plus -  the hub of a dynamic community of photographers in the Middle East brought acclaimed American photo journalist David Burnett in Dubai for a display of his Bob Marley photos and a series of workshops. Burnett began working as a freelance photographer for Life and Time magazines allowing him to travel extensively and capture timeless moments for almost 4 centuries now.  He was named one of the "100 Most Important People in Photography" by the American Photo magazine.

The show displays photos he incorporated in his first book, Soul Rebel: An Intimate Portrait of Bob Marley in Jamaica and Beyond. It features the Marley's music and his contemporaries, photographed first in Jamaica in 1976, then during his European tour spring of 1977.  He said a lot of interesting things during his shoot with Bob in Kingston.  In an interview with The New York Times (2009) I chanced upon a lot of engaging details and for some reason I was fixated on this question.

Q. Did you get a contact high when you were with Bob Marley?

A. Well, I will say this: When you’re at the home of Bob Marley and he lights up a spliff, because that’s what he does, and he passes it around — your job is to be a very good guest. And I was a very good guest. I’m not sure my pictures got any better, but there’s always that hope.

Last Thursday I called GPP to inquire about the exhibit timings and I specifically asked if they were open on Fridays and the person I spoke with said yes.  So I invited my friends to come spend a few hours with me and Bob. Yesterday we drove all the way to Al Quoz Industrial Area I in high spirits, only to find out they were closed.  Sobrang bad trip lang.  Good thing the office was built with glass doors so we were able to get a sneak peek (literally) of Burnett's works.

Feeling unaffected (chos, apektado ako no!), we thought of various ways to improve our day.  We went to church, window shopping (kuno, pero d pa rin napigilan mamili), made a video for a friend (if you're reading this, you owe us big time, LOL!), grocery shopping and for a change we stayed outdoors to enjoy the final days of the cold weather.  Here are some photos we took, camwhoring galore ang peg.

I'm still hoping to get a glance of this rare exhibition.  I'd try to make time for it. However, this seems impossible to do considering they're open on weekdays and office hours.  Bahala na si Batman. So for enthusiasts who might want to drop by, check out the details below.

Exhibition: ‘Soul Rebel’ until April 5, 2012 at Gulf Photo Plus, Al Serkal Avenue, Al Quoz (04 380 8545)
Artist: David Burnett
Price range of works: Dhs 5000 to Dhs18,370

"Bob Marley was born in the countryside up in Nine Mile but at an early age lived in Kingston. And Kingston was then — and still is — a pretty tough town and very polarized politically. Out of that turmoil and street violence came an amazing array of very poetic and sensitive music. He was a gifted poet who really understood the most basic things about human interaction. And this is what you feel in his songs."         - David Burnett

A LOVE-HATE relationship with my body

Best Blogger Tips
Okay, I've been lazy.  I admit it.  I've held on too long and now it's time to let go, I'm talking about my FATS.  I've been nourishing these unhealthy little babies for a while now, probably analogous to raising brats.  Too stubborn and too self righteous, ayaw na nilang kumawala.  It's been a while since I've hit the gym so I'm not sure how my metabolism will respond.  I've lost weight before but after that I slacked off big time.  I could have been a star athlete you now, ahahahaha - kidding.  I'm not not really the sporty type. There are a lot of sports that I love to watch but I hate to play.

I should consider myself lucky, I don't pay for expensive gym memberships.  I don't even have gym clothes (I thought it was a waste of money) so I just borrow from my housemates.  All I have to do was to step out of the flat, take the elevator and go 3 floors up.  There's a gym on the top floor of our building, it has always there waiting for me to come visit. But I was neglectful.  I mean it was fun not going to the gym - less panting, no sweating, and no extreme body ache. Then I started to watch my waist thicken and I felt a bit puffier than I use to be.

So last night I came back with a revenge, I went back to the treadmill. A 1km run was always a walk in the park for me, but last night I nearly vomited.  But I still pushed myself. I struggled to even ride the exercise bike, do a round of sit ups and cap it off with step aerobics.  After that, I nearly died - or at least I thought so.  Here are some photos from last night's session.  Excuse the haggardness of the fez, haggard talaga kami.

I will have weeks wherein I will go religiously to the gym, then fall off schedule and fail.  It could be a vicious cycle. I'm starting to eat more healthy now, although I believe I've always been a healthy eater - no rice for almost 4 years now, more greens and less fat (buti na lang walang lechon dito).  I've been drinking less alcohol and more coffee (I know dapat tea pero mas okay naman siguro ang coffee sa alcohol diba?).  I can't even remember the last time I consumed an alcoholic drink.  Now I just have to constantly push myself to exercise and get into a routine.  I seriously hope I can do it.  I even have a back up plan on days that I feel sluggish.  I just have to look back on my "beach body ready post" and think about the discomfort I feel wrapping myself on the idea that I won't look good wearing a bikini.  But hey it's not all that, I love who I am and I find worth in myself but to live a healthier life isn't so bad and now I'm giving it a chance.

Sun, sun, sun, here it comes

Best Blogger Tips
It's screaming summer - the streaking sun rays, the crowded sandy beach and the warm crashing of the waves. Bathing suit season is definitely here.  Question is, are you beach body ready?  Sure I'm no Victoria's Secret angel, but no matter how self conscious I get most of the time when wearing a swimsuit it doesn't hinder me from finding the right one for my shape.  I'm not really an expert on this, but they said you should start by classifying your body type (in terms of shape).  You can try Oprah's cheat sheet to determine which one matches yours.

So last weekend, my girlfriends and I spent a whole day searching for the perfect swimwear.  I hate to admit but I'm not really that excited knowing that I haven't reached my bikini body goal for this summer.  Since I'm shopping with the craziest bunch of overly excited, loud shrieking girls I was forced into that swimwear splurging situation.  The upcoming Maldives trip is partly to blame for this, the short holiday keeps pushing my panic button on.  So there we were, shop hopping - exploring almost all swimwear brands known to mankind (exagg!).  Seriously though we have a personal list of trusted brands when it comes to beach wear.  Whether you’re into bandeau tops, halters, skirted bottoms or adorable little boy shorts, these brands sure do make them sweet and fashionable.  You can also turn to these shops if you're looking for trendy and comfortable summer dresses, skirts, shorts and cover-ups.

So last night we gathered all that we got and as we stood back and look at the merchandise we thought, "You know what? We may have overdone it a little bit".  Here's the mountain of beach wear we bought, enough to start an ukay-ukay I guess.  I hate to let the female population down, but we absolutely over shopped.  So here it is our TOP 8 shops for beach wear.

It's safe to say we're almost ready for our next adventure.  Flight bookings and hotel reservations (CHECK!), Swimwear na pang isang buwan kahit ilang araw lang kami (CHECK!).  I'm just down to counting the days until vacation...60, 59, 58, 57, 56, 55, 54, 53, 52, 51, 50... How do I get my mind off it? Gah, it may seem forever.  Maldives, take me away.
